Daylight Viewfinder for iPhone

Have you ever tried to take pictures with your iPhone outside on a sunny day? It’s hard to see what is on the display because the sun washes it out. The Daylight Viewfinder changes that. The Daylight Viewfinder is a patent pending viewfinder eyepiece for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad that blocks out external light to make taking pictures and videos outside in bright sunlight easier. Just start the special app, turn the suction ring to attach the Daylight Viewfinder, and you are ready to take pictures in the brightest of conditions.

How It Works

The Daylight Viewfinder app shrinks the live camera image down to a size that fits under the eyepiece, and the eyepiece blocks out the surrounding light. The eyepiece also magnifies and focuses the image.  Even though the resolution of the live image you see is reduced, Apple’s Retina display is so good that you still get a great view of what the picture will look like.  Above left is a screen capture of the iPhone’s display showing what was seen through the viewfinder and on the right is the picture of Mt. Hood that the iPhone took using the Daylight Viewfinder.

Compact

As you can see from the video, the Daylight Viewfinder collapses to a small size to easily fit into your pocket or purse.

Viewfinder Image

The viewfinder image on the iPhone is 216 pixels by 162 pixels.  When magnified by the eyepiece, it is large and clear, with plenty of detail.  Below are a couple of screen captures of the viewfinder area.

App Features

The Daylight Viewfinder app has video mode, flash mode, camera zoom, and picture review, all of the features that Apple's camera app has except for HDR and the face time camera.  And after the launch, we will begin working on advanced features like panorama and burst mode.

The Idea

After unsuccessfully trying to take pictures with his iPhone while skiing on Mt. Hood last year, Paul tried to find a viewfinder attachment for his iPhone.  When he couldn’t find one, he decided to make his own.  With the help of an iOS developer, and after many hours in the garage making prototypes, the Daylight Viewfinder is now ready for production.

The Plan

In order to produce the Daylight Viewfinder, we are in the process of setting up a new company that will coordinate the manufacturing, assembly, app development, and distribution of the Daylight Viewfinder.  We will use local injection molding companies to manufacture and assemble, and local order fulfillment centers to distribute the Daylight Viewfinder.  We plan to rely mostly on internet sellers such as Amazon, but we will market to brick and mortar retailers as well.
The Kickstarter editions of the Daylight Viewfinder are being manufactured right now and should be ready to ship as soon as the project is successfully funded.  Once the project is funded, manufacturing of the injection mold tooling will begin and should be complete by the end of September.  First run Daylight Viewfinders should begin shipping in October.

You Can Help

We are working hard to make the Daylight Viewfinder a reality.  We have a working prototype and a beta version of the required software.  But we also need your help.  To get it into production we will have to spend more than $30,000 on the injection mold tooling.

Made in the USA

Support us on Kickstarter, and you will be supporting American jobs.  The Daylight Viewfinder will be manufactured entirely in the USA.  We are not going to outsource it.

Compatibility

Today, the Daylight Viewfinder is compatible with the iPhone 4, 4S, iPod touch 4th generation, and the new iPad only.  The app will be available for free on the Apple App Store.  With the success of this project, we hope to expand its use to other smart phones, mobile devices, and compact cameras.

Nokia refutes waterproof coating on future Lumia and PureView phones

It was just yesterday that we talked about the possibility of Finnish smartphone manufacturer, Nokia, having the intention to introduce a special kind of waterproof coating on their upcoming Lumia as well as PureView devices. I guess that is a rumor that has gotten out of bounds, so it is good to see that Nokia has stepped forward to deliver that grain of salt you have all been waiting for – by refuting such claims for a waterproof smartphone.
According to Conor Pierce, Nokia’s VP for Western Europe, he mentioned about Nokia’s research heritage, which included a waterproof coating for its devices, while rolling out the more affordable Nokia Lumia 610 to journalists there. Something got lost in translation, I believe, and those with a more imaginative mind decided to put two and two together in order to get five – which was clearly not the case. Nokia clarified that Conor “did not say that Superhydrophobic coatings would be coming to future Pureview and Lumia devices.” OtterBox need not worry about their bread and butter then…

Samsung speaks on blue Galaxy S III delay: “high standards” to blame

Samsung has finally stumped up a statement on the Galaxy S III Pebble Blue delay, admitting that quality control issues around the “newly invented” color and special coating will indeed result in 2-3 week shortages. “In order to meet the highest internal quality standards and to provide the best quality Galaxy SIII to customers,” Samsung told retailer MobileFun, ”a short supply of Pebble Blue version is expected in some regions.”

Reports circulated at the end of last week that Samsung had experienced manufacturing issues with its Pebble Blue production. A “small” error had supposedly forced the company to junk hundreds of thousands of blue casings and start again, although production of the Marble White variant was supposedly unaffected.
Samsung did not comment on the reports, and it’s only with retailers and carriers confirming the supply issues this week that any news has made it out to pre-order customers. As it stands, 16GB white models are expected to be available from carriers this week as planned, though some online retailers have warned unlocked devices may ship a day or two later than expected.
Availability of the blue model, however, may not happen until mid- to late-June. We’ve more details on the Galaxy S III in our full review.
Full Samsung statement:
“Samsung’s Galaxy SIII Pebble Blue version comes with a newly invented blue colour and special hyper-glaze material.
In order to meet the highest internal quality standards and to provide the best quality Galaxy SIII to customers, a short supply of Pebble Blue version is expected in some regions in the next 2-3 weeks.
Samsung is working hard to ensure that customers will get the Pebble Blue coloured devices as soon as possible.”

Must Have Apps For Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 900

Late last year, Nokia released the first real Windows Phone, the Lumia 800. The device while impressive an impressive Windows Phone running handset, lacked a front-facing camera and the 3.7-inch screen was just too small. Earlier this year at MWC, Nokia announced a bigger brother of the Lumia 800, the Lumia 900, which comes with a bigger screen (4.3-inch) and a front-facing camera. The Lumia 900 is mainly targeted towards the United States, and was launched recently with a huge marketing campaign from Nokia and AT&T. In fact, this is the biggest handset launch from Nokia in the States in the last few years.

With the launch of new phones, bigger marketing campaigns and Microsoft’s money, the Windows Phone ecosystem has grown considerably in the last few months. The Windows Phone Marketplace now contains more than 70,000 apps, which is pretty decent for an OS, which is hardly 2 years old. I frankly don’t care about the number of apps an OS has. I want quality over quantity, and the WP7 marketplace is lacking in this department. Nevertheless, here is my list of the best apps currently available in the Windows Phone marketplace, which will take full advantage of your brand new Lumia 800 or 900 -:
Pulse – If you have owned an iOS or Android phone previously, chances are you already know about Pulse. Pulse is a beautiful RSS reader, with a very unique UI. Its unique UI and its price tag – free – is the main reason behind the app being a hit across all the major mobile platforms.
Skydrive – Dropbox has been my on-the-go cloud storage service for quite sometime now. However, there is no official Dropbox client available in the Windows Phone Marketplace, which is quite a bummer. Thankfully, a few months ago, Microsoft filled that gap by releasing the official Skydrive app for WP7, which allows users to access their files stored on Skydrive right from their phone. Considering that Skydrive comes with 25GB of free storage, and will be tightly integrated with Windows 8, moving to Skydrive as your primary cloud storage service does seem useful for all Windows users.
Flashlight X – What’s the use of the LED flash in your phone if you cannot use it as a Torch in those dark situations? With nearly every Windows Phone coming equipped with a LED flash, Flashlight X is a must have app.

YouTube Pro – The default YouTube client for Windows Phone is sadly just a bookmark to the official YouTube mobile homepage. Looking at the OS market share, Google does not seem to be much interested in releasing a decent YouTube client for WP7 as well. Thankfully, YouTube Pro is a decent alternative to fulfill all your YouTube-ing needs. The app allows you to view videos in HQ or HD quality over Wi-Fi or 3G along with the ability to download them as well.
Rowi – If you own a Windows Phone, and use Twitter frequently, Rowi is the MUST have app for you. It is without a doubt the best Twitter client available in the Windows Phone marketplace. The folks behind Rowi recently released v2.0 which includes tons of new features including Readability integration, performance improvements, a new context menu for easier access to frequently used options, toast notifications for messages and mentions and most importantly, Fast app switching support.
EvernoteEvernote is another must have app for me irrespective of the OS I use. Thankfully, there is an official Evernote client for WP7 and its pretty good. The app allows users to pin any specific note or a shortcut to a new note for quick access.
Skype – Back at MWC, the Skype/MS team finally released a beta version of Skype for Windows Phone. Considering that MS now owns Skype, the app was under development for quite sometime and the beta version is pretty basic as well. Anyways, chances are Windows Phone 8 will feature a very tight integration with Skype, so until then the Skype app should be capable of fulfilling all your needs.

Top apps for your Lumia 900

So you’ve charged up your brand new Nokia Lumia 900, customized the settings to your liking, and you’ve set-up connections to your Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and email accounts. Now what?

It’s time to dive into the wonderful world of apps, of course.

We’ve curated a list that is sure to get you off to a great start with your Lumia 900. Enjoy:

Top apps for your Lumia 900

Facebook at Marketplace

You can upload your Facebook friends straight into the People Hub, but it helps to have the free app too so that you can run your account in full on the go. Facebook allows you to access groups, messages and other Facebook facilities in one good looking app.

WPCentral

WPCentral is an amazing Windows Phone focused blog that features Windows Phone news, app reviews and even accessories. The companion application costs $.99 and is worth it – you can access blog articles, reviews and even leave a comment in the application. Any serious Lumia owner should have this app on their phone.

Nextgen Reader

Nextgen Reader is a full feature app for Google Reader users. With Nextgen, you can sync your feeds for offline access and send a piece of news to ReadItLater if you don’t have time right now. Oh, and it won our March App Madness competition.

4th and Mayor

4th and Mayor is a simple app to utilize Foursquare. The app easily lets you see where friends are located and check-in with a few easy steps. A recent update makes it easy to check-in via scanning a QR code and viewing menus of participating restaurants is a nice feature sas well.

CNN

CNN has a unique partnership with Nokia that has delivered the CNN application exclusively for Lumia devices. The app delivers awesome news coverage including video and even a nice tie-in with iReport so you can submit your own news directly in the app.

Ebay at Windows Marketplace

Everyone uses eBay at some time and whether you are buying or selling, you need to have access 24/7. eBay for Windows Phone lets you create a listing or buy an item, depending on how you want to use the service.

Expensify at Windows Marketplace

Expensify is an amazingly easy app that takes the pain out of doing expense reports. I use Expensify at my job and I absolutely love the mobile app.

Evernote at Windows Marketplace

Evernote is a full featured app that you can use in every aspect of your life. Keep tabs on everything with this nicely laid out app.

What's App at Windows Marketplace

Another instant messaging app that you can use across platforms. Especially great for keeping in touch with anyone on Blackberry Messaging Service (BBM). Just input your number, accept the terms and conditions and the Windows Phone app will give you a list of contacts already using it.

Kayak at Windows Marketplace

Anyone who travels will find Kayak vital for checking flights and sourcing routes. Don’t leave home without it.

Pulse at the Windows Marketplace

Any news junkie will appreciate Pulse with its fully customizable news interface. You can browse by source or subject and get your fix of everything that’s in the news mix. Pulse gives you your news in one application.

TripAdvisor at Windows Marketplace

TripAdvisor is the travelers’ companion. You can access hotel reviews, experiences and all sorts of information that is crowdsourced and ready to make your trip happy and expedient.

Social Camera 2.5 at Windows Marketplace

Another new one for me. But it’s looking like a must for anyone uploading video from their Nokia Lumia 900. Social Camera the first Windows Phone app that allows you to upload your own videos to YouTube, and the only one that lets you transfer your videos from SkyDrive to YouTube.

Xbox Companion at Windows Marketplace

One of the reasons for owning a Nokia Lumia phone has to be the Xbox link. For more details about the app that never stops playing, see our post.

Once you’ve downloaded this app, you’ll start wondering how you ever did without. ESPN ScoreCenter brings you scores, news, and standings from hundreds of sports leagues with personalized scoreboards as well as breaking news and analysis, and all the latest video clips. It’s a must-have for any sports freak out there.

Angry Birds at Windows Marketplace

This is a must have game for any mobile phone. For me, my daughter can’t go a day without playing Angry Birds – so this is a must-have app for me.

Plants Vs Zombies at Windows Marketplace

Our colleague Phil Schwarzmann loves this game and it’s immensely popular in the Marketplace.

Tetris at Windows Marketplace

Keep your Tetris skills in shape whenever you feel like it. Perhaps THE best puzzler ever dreamed of.

Bejeweled at Windows Marketplace

A gem of a game, need I say more?

Epicurious at Windows Marketplace

A constant companion in the supermarket, Epicurious enables you to find new recipes and buy the ingredients at a glance. The choice of dishes is enough to satisfy the heartiest of appetites.

Endomondo at Windows Marketplace

Comes in very handy when you’ve been overdoing the Epicurious app. With choice of activities, Endomondo produces maps of your efforts and keeps track of your achievements.

Samsung Focus 2 Review

AT&T has no shortage of value-priced phones, and just lately, a pretty good selection of 4G LTE devices as well. But the two haven’t crossed over much yet, and the ranks of Windows Phone 7 devices are a little slim as well. Happily, all three of these categories can add the Samsung Focus 2, which goes on sale starting today for $49.99 with a two-year contract. Is it worth your hard-earned greenbacks? Let’s find out.

Hardware

Samsung has become surprisingly adept at putting out quality smartphone hardware, even on the low-end of its range. In general build and quality, the Focus 2 feels like a shrunken version of the white Galaxy S II: compact, light, glossy and very solid. The hard plastic shell isn’t the thinnest available, but there’s nearly zero flex, and its gentle curves feel comfortable in the hand. Controls are found mounted within the silver ring surrounding the phone: volume on the left side, power and two-stage camera button (yes!) on the right.
The front of the device is dominated by a 4-inch, 480×800 Super AMOLED display. Margins on the side are small, but fatten out on the top and bottom to accommodate the speaker, front-facing camera and Windows Phone controls. The screen itself is rather typical of Samsung – if you like bright, saturated colors, you’ll be right at home, but if you’re more used to a 720p display or can’t stand the slight fuzziness of PenTile panels, you probably won’t be convinced.
Around the back you’ll find a battery door that uses Samsung’s “snap-on” technique, beneath which is the 1750mAh battery, MicroSIM card slot and not much else. The 5.0 megapixel camera sits next to a tiny speaker. There’s a clever little loop in the speaker grill that pushes up the back of the phone about a millimeter – this ensures that there’s always some space between the back of the phone and a flat surface for speakerphone or video calls. The speaker itself is a little weak, but not nearly so much as some of the others I’ve seen, such as the Galaxy S III.
Under the hood are some respectable specs, even if they won’t set the world on fire. A 1.4ghz single-core processor is paired to 512Mb of RAM – not the best out there, but as we’ll see later, plenty for Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. Internal storage is just 8GB, which you’ll have to make due with, since the Focus 2 lacks a MicroSD card slot. Naturally it’s got all the wireless bells and whistles with WiFi and Bluetooth accompanying 4G LTE. In the box you’ll get the standard wall-wart and data cable combo, plus a surprisingly nice headset with in-line music controls that matches the phone’s glossy white finish.

Software

If you’ve seen one Windows Phone, you’ve seen them all, at least from a software perspective. Aside from AT&T’s rather annoying additions (U-Verse, Navigator, Yellow Pages and more, all of which can be uninstalled) there are no surprises here. If you’re not already familiar with Mango, check out our review here.
The Focus 2 handles Mango with aplomb, even as a budget phone. Navigating the slick and unique interface was quick and fluid, and I didn’t start noticing any slowdown until I began running dozens of apps at once. Speaking of apps, there’s nothing to be done about the lack of them on WP7. While you should be able to find utilities for most tasks, the absence of big names like Pandora is hard to overlook.
Those who are familiar with Windows Phone, or perhaps more likely at this price point, those who haven’t used a smartphone before, will not be disappointed. If you’ve been spoiled for choice of apps on Android or iOS, or you just don’t live in a Windows world, you may want to look elsewhere. WP7 Mango is undeniably beautiful and it’ll handle all the basic tasks of the other big players, but a platform lives and dies on its software support.

Camera and Media

The 5-megapixel camera on the Focus 2 is pretty much what you’d expect: reliable enough for candid snapshots, but “serious” photographers (if the term can be applied to mobile phones at all) will be better served elsewhere. Even in good lighting, I found myself having to adjust the white balance settings for shots where the sun wasn’t directly visible. Colors were erratically over-saturated or muted.
Video is likewise lukewarm. With plenty of lighting the 720p sensor does well enough, but you’ll see some banding when moving around (and with a phone this light, it tends to happen a lot). The VGA front-facing camera is suitable only for video chat – self-pics will turn out better with the rear camera and a little guesswork.
All that said, the two-stage camera button is a fantastic addition (though standard on Windows Phone 7 devices). The shutter is quick to focus and it activated when pressed and held, even when the phone is off. I do not exaggerate when I say, I wish every single smartphone had a dedicated camera button, even when the camera itself is nothing to write home about.
Music is a standard experience, even if it is a little weak coming out of the phone’s speakers. It’s a good thing, then, that the pair of headphones included is a step above the general lot, with easy-to use in-line controls and a microphone. It’s nice to see this inclusion, which is all too often absent on more expensive devices. Video plays well enough, though if you’re constantly browsing YouTube or the like, you’ll want something with a larger screen.

Battery and radio

The 1750mAh battery on the Focus 2 is something more usually found in a much larger smartphone. The combination of an efficient screen and WP7′s generally un-demanding workload mean that the Focus 2 can ho surprisingly long without a charge. Despite some pretty heavy browsing and talking sessions, I couldn’t drain the Focus 2 to less than 40% of its capacity over a 12-hour workday. Those of you who are frustrated with puny run-times shouldn’t have a problem here.
Likewise, the call quality on the Focus 2 is surprising. Speaking with friends and family member across the country was sharp and clear, despite the generally spotty coverage in my mountainous area. While I don’t yet live in an AT&T 4G LTE coverage are, I was at full bars nearly all the time, though actual speeds were a bit disappointing in the 1 to 1.5mbps range, where other AT&T phones tend to get at least 2mbps.

Value

The Focus 2 is undeniably a good deal at $50 on contract. The combination of solid specs, great battery life and good ergonomics would make it an instant recommendation… if it weren’t for other AT&T phones too close to it in the price range. For $50 more you can get the excellent Nokia Lumia 900, which beats it in nearly every category and looks great to boot. If you’re wiling to switch to Android, the 4.5-inch HTC Vivid is just $49.99.
If you’re in an area without LTE or you simply don’t care about the faster data speeds, your options grow even more. There’s the still-respectable iPhone 3GS, currently going for a dollar on AT&T’s website, the original HTC Titan for just a penny, or the 720p LG Nitro HD for the same price. Don’t get me wrong, the Focus 2 is a solid phone… but if I had my heart set on it, I might wait a couple of months for the price to drop to free or practically so.

Wrap-up

The Samsung Focus 2 is a very tidy device, and currently the cheapest phone on AT&T to combine LTE and Windows Phone 7. Anyone who purchases it won’t be disappointed, especially those who require long battery life. That said, if a great camera or a big, high-res screen are in your list of must-haves, look elsewhere.
It’s also hard to recommend the Focus 2 above the Nokia Lumia 900. The extra fifty bones is worth it in basically every category. Likewise, the other alternatives mentioned above can get you access to more apps (if not such a polished OS) for the same or less money. The Focus 2 is ideal for those who want to get into Windows Phone 7 for as little money as possible, without sacrificing build quality or an LTE connection. The phone is on sale starting today for $49.99 with a two-year contract.
